Biosci. Biotechnol. Biochem., 1998
Instructions to Overseas Authors

General rules

  1. Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Biochemistry (Biosci. Biotechnol. Biochem.) publishes previously unpublished original papers in the various fields mentioned in its name. Papers must describe valuable new information accompanied by conclusions, and must be complete in themselves.
  2. Manuscripts will be dated as "received" on the day of their receipt by the Society, and as "accepted" on the day when an editor judged them to be accepted for publication. However, manuscripts that do not conform to these Instructions cannot be accepted.
  3. The copyright of material published in the Journal is held by the Society.
  4. Manuscripts must be in English.

Categories of papers

The Journal publishes papers in the categories of Regular Papers, Preliminary Communications, Notes, and Reviews. All papers must be unpublished original manuscripts. It is permissible, however, to submit work that has been presented in lecture form or as an abstract published in the collected abstracts of a meeting.

Regular Papers
Regular Papers must be reports in final form and complete in themselves. There is no upper limit on their length, but reports that will take no more than six printed pages are preferable.

Preliminary Communications
Preliminary Communications should describe an important finding or conclusion that is of particular interest to justify its publication in preliminary form. Preliminary Communications are to be no more than two printed pages long, and if written later in expanded form, they can be considered for publication as a Regular Paper.

Notes
Notes can contain a finding in a specialized field, a new experimental method, or the like, which might not be suitable for publication in a Regular Paper, but which should be published. The limit for the length of Notes is two printed pages.

Reviewing process
  1. An Editor will be assigned to handle the reviewing process for each manuscript, being chosen on the basis of the field of research to which the paper is a contribution. That Editor will select two or more referees to provide an evaluation of the manuscript, and the Editor will make a final decision on the suitability of the paper based on the opinions of the referees.
  2. The Editor may suggest revisions in the contents and the wording of the manuscript, and may ask that certain points be clarified further. If the authors decide to submit a revised manuscript, they should send it directly to the Editor in charge within three weeks. A point-by-point response to the questions and comments of the Editor should be included with two copies of the revised manuscript.
  3. When the Editor has decided to accept a manuscript, it will be sent for editing of the English by a rewriter selected by the Society. The edited manuscript will be returned to the authors for their checking for correctness of the meaning of the revised sentences. The retyped manuscript should then be sent to the Society, Charges for English revision may be made if extensive rewriting is necessary.
  4. If a manuscript is not returned to the Society within three weeks (except for reasons accepted by the Society) or if any changes are made in the contents of the manuscript, it will be treated as a new submission, be given a new date of receipt, and be reviewed again, if necessary.
  5. If the authors anticipate that revision of a manuscript as suggested by the Editor will take more than three weeks, they should so inform the Editor. If the authors fail to inform the Editor, and the paper is not returned to the Society, the paper will be assumed to have been withdrawn by the authors. If the authors decide to withdraw their paper from consideration for publication, they should inform the Editor.
